A list of practical recommendations for Columbus’ Schiller Recreation Center to improve its sustainability and longterm functionality. These green building methods were strategically selected to position the facility as LEED-certified. The focus on environmentalism is fitting for a community center, as this is a place for conscious improvement, gathering, and collaboration.

 
 

Interior Improvements:

  • Install low-flow faucets and dual-flush water closets in all bathrooms to reduce water consumption

  • Implement adjustable lighting fixtures and appropriate acoustic accommodations to improve user experience

  • Upgrade to energy efficient appliances in the kitchen facilities to reduce power consumption

  • Install submeters to measure the efficiency of the plumbing, irrigation, and power systems

  • Repurpose graywater from the showers and sinks for to water landscaped areas

Exterior Improvements:

  • Develop a green roof with native plant species and install grid pavers in the parking lot to reduce impervious surfaces

  • Install solar panels on another portion of the roof to harness a renewable energy source

  • Install electric vehicle charging stations and additional bike racks to encourage green modes of travel

  • Implement entryway systems such as grates and mats to reduce the contaminates brought into the center

Policy Improvements:

  • Develop a recycling system for the paper and plastic products used for events and classes

  • Offer a composting program for community members to discard natural materials resourcefully

  • Create a sustainability guide to direct future projects that utilizes local, durable, and socially responsible materials

  • Implement a green cleaning policy that minimizes contaminants and uses environmentally friendly cleaning products

Community Improvements:

  • Support a nearby transit stop and improved connectivity to bike paths to promote alternative modes of travel

  • Advocate for increased affordable housing options and accessible pathways to offer sustainability for all
